We loved getting suited and booted, with posh frocks for the ladies, when we attended the 10th Midlands Family Business Awards at Leicester City’s football stadium.
As a team we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to changing circumstances. We used those skills when three places became unexpectedly available on the day of the awards for our colleagues who had drove in from our Poland office the previous day.
This meant a last-minute dash, hours before the event, to a menswear hire shop in Eastwood to find three dinner suits. Formal shoes also needed to be sourced to complete the outfits. There was a moment of hilarity when we realised on the night that one of the guys had odd shoes! Fortunately, they weren’t too odd – and there was a right and a left shoe – so he put his best foot forward, as we always do. It gave a whole new meaning to thinking on your feet!
It was the first year we had entered these awards and we were over the moon to be a finalist in the Employer of the Year category. Like all finalists we were also up for the People’s Choice Award.
Now, in our day job of providing time-critical and mission-critical transport solutions, we are used to things taking an unexpected twist. But NONE of us saw the surprise waiting for us at the end of the awards night.
We were in impressive company sitting in a room full of high-achieving family businesses. It was great to celebrate their successes. You can read all the winners and highly-commended companies here.
Of course, you always HOPE it might be your night, but we were very pleased for Leicestershire-based CR Civil Engineering Limited who scooped both Employer of the Year and the People’s Choice Award.
But, in our working days (and nights, because we’re a true 24/7 operation) we always say it’s never over until it’s over. So it proved on this glittering night, because suddenly the organisers announced a special Anniversary Award and our video began to play on the big screen.
We were thrilled and, we’re not ashamed to say, quite emotional.
Judges said they were giving us the anniversary award because they felt we embraced the true spirit of the awards. That meant the world to us. We are so proud that three generations of the Lobina family have grown our business from its humble origins in the 1960s as a simple food delivery service. It’s also essential to us that ALL our employees are treated like family.
We would like to say a big thank you to all the organisers and sponsors of the Family Business Awards, to the clients, friends and family who voted for us in the People’s Choice award and to our team at Lobina for being simply the best.
You can contact us 24 hours a day for enquiries, support or item tracking. Logistics never sleep – and neither do we.
